Random team generator

Paste your names, choose how many teams you need, and press Make teams. Teams are shuffled fairly and never differ in size by more than one.

Your teams will appear here.

How to make random teams

  1. Type or paste the names, one per line.
  2. Choose Number of teams (for example 4 teams) or People per team (for example groups of 3).
  3. Press Make teams. Not happy? Press Shuffle again for a fresh split.
  4. Press Copy teams to paste the result into a chat, email or document.

Even sizes, every time

Names are shuffled and then dealt out like cards, so 10 names in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 3 and 3. With people per team, leftover names join existing teams instead of forming a tiny last group, so 10 names in groups of 3 gives teams of 4, 3 and 3.

Need one name instead of groups? Use the random name picker.

Questions

Are the teams really random?

Yes. The list is shuffled with the browser's cryptographic random generator using an unbiased method, so every possible split is equally likely.

What happens if the names don't divide evenly?

Teams are dealt out one name at a time, so sizes never differ by more than one. For example, 11 names in 3 teams gives teams of 4, 4 and 3.

Can I choose the number of people per team instead?

Yes. Switch to People per team and enter the group size. The generator makes as many full teams as it can and adds any leftover names to them one each, so nobody ends up in a group of one.

What does Pick a captain do?

It marks the first person in each shuffled team as captain, so captains are random too.

Is my list saved?

Your names and settings are saved only in your own browser on this device and are never sent to us.
